san francisco highway 101

We started the day exploring the mysteries of the Winchester House before hitting San Francisco to check out the Painted Ladies, eat sushi with Twitter friends, and then zoom across the Golden Gate Bridge.

We made the sad, sad decision to abort our jaunt up the coast and started heading East on I-80. We have to be in Chicago by Friday, so we have to sacrifice Portland and Seattle this trip. Next time! We faced North and drifted East over the Sierra Nevada range in late afternoon/early evening. Which is an excellent time of day to go over those mountains — the sun hit the pines and perfectly lit the passes as we went up and down the road. I think we finally hit a groove and found a happy traveling zen.

Originally we planned to stop in Reno, but the road is sweet. We’ll stop somewhere, eventually. It’s 8:18pm and we’ve traveled 4212.2 miles.

We found the Painted Ladies a little after 1pm, and we walked around Alamo Park until @mmark77 and his lovely girlfriend, @juliaz came to get us to have sushi. Sushi with Twitter friends is always an awesome idea!

They got us back on Highway 1 and over the Golden Gate Bridge about 3:30-ish. Found gas on the other side of the bay and are headed towards Napa Valley/Sacramento.

We’ve traveled 3982.5 miles.

We got to the Winchester Mystery House at about 10am and the next tour was 10:05am. Success! I love it when a plan comes together. We did the mansion tour and saw such sites as the Door to Nowhere, the window in the floor, seance room, the power of 13 (Watch Your Step and Mrs. Winchester are both 13 letters. *shivers*), some lovely Tiffany stained glass windows, and the surrounding gardens.

She keep construction going on the house for 38 years to appease the spirits of those shot by Winchester rifles. They’re not 100% sure that’s why she did it, hence the mystery. It’s a lovely home, though, and I appreciated the oddities. Both Pattie and I think it’s worth a stop next time you’re in San Jose, California.

We’re heading North to San Francisco to see the Painted Ladies and Golden Gate Bridge before heading East.

We’ve traveled 3898.1 miles. It’s 12:09pm.
